switching blogs
Maybe it is just me, but lately I’ve been a little unhappy with Blogger. Everything works perfect, they have great compatibility, but I just have been getting what I want to out of Blogger.
They are great for personal blogs, but I feel like I want a slightly more professional and cleaner site than what I have now. I’m not a programmer, but I can handle my own around html widgets and I understand java but I can’t work it.
I want a lot of flexibility. I use Feedburner to feed my RSS because they give me lots of options. I want to interact with Technorati, Digg, and del.icio.us as well. I don’t need to pay for a custom built one. If I did, I’d come visit Open Source CU!
So what do you guys think? Stay with Blogger and try to make it more professional? WordPress? Typepad?

Change to WordPress. I was with Blogger for 2 years, came across some people who said WordPress was better, changed and would never go back. It is much easier and many more options.
You can transfer all of your Blogger entries to WordPress very easily.
Good luck!
You’re making me rethink what to do with my personal blog. I finally bought treyreeme dot com, but I haven’t done anything with it yet. I signed up for a Blogger blog, but haven’t started on it.
I’ve seen some really nice work on sprucing up design on Blogger templates by editing the CSS, and I like the price.
But I’m not a developer either. I think I know enough about it to hack my way around styling it. Sorry if I’m not adding much here. Just expressing my own internal conflict.
(Thanks for the shoutout to OSCU – we’re slowly working on a redesign there. Taking a lot longer than we expected.)
I’m not much of a CSS guru, so I’d be pretty lost trying to mod a style sheet in Blogger.
Trey, who did you buy your domain from? I have a few on the list of ones to buy but I keep holding off because I want to buy them the same place I’m going to host them and I haven’t picked a hosting company yet.
WordPress.com is their free online version, but wordpress.org lets you download their free, open source software for use on your own server. Doing that opens up a lot more options.
And WordPress tells you alot of what you can’t do, like have ads on your site or use java anywhere. But at the same time, they also look more flexible!
I switched from Blogger to WordPress a while back. Been perfectly happy w/ WP, but if I could go back, I would’ve gone w/ Typepad. Only reason: I think their blog designs look more “professional.”
There are a lot of free blogger templates out there, and w/ WP, I believe you have to pay if you want a custom design.
But WP has been fine. If you do stay w/ WP, one thing for you to consider: Think about who you’re writing for. Us older folks (40+) find it hard to read white text on a black background online. And if its hard to read… well, it won’t get read.
Robbie, I bought the domain from Google through their Hosted Apps for Your Domain program. I think it was $10 for a year, and Google in turn went through GoDaddy.
BTW, the design on your new WordPress site rocks.
