I’m curious to hear from the “no way” folks. Why?
Especially for wifi enabled mobile devices, wifi will make your lines shorter by giving your members (and their kids) something to do while they wait, and self service easier (ex: an msr shows a member how to pay a bill or do a transfer right on their phone).
Wifi in branches shouldn’t be approached as an acquisition technique (folks probably won’t join just for the wifi). Rather, it should be viewed as yet another value add for members. Why shouldn’t you let them cruise the web on their wifi enabled devices while waiting “patiently” to be assisted? In my mind, they will be much happier when a rep is ready to help them if they can distract themselves for 3-5 minutes.
I equate it to coffee and donuts in the lobby. Sure, not everyone will want some, but you’re going to make those few that do really excited. It seems like a small price to pay for happy members.
Just to clarify, because Ron Shevlin is sassing me, I don’t mean the lines will be literally shorter. I mean lines feel shorter when you have something to occupy yourself. Or when your screaming kid has something to occupy his or herself.
Sure, why not? Dirt cheap and a nice perk. But don’t do it because you think it will magically transform your credit union.
I sent this to our IT Dept. They’ve not moved this fast since I first accessed Facebook from a work PC.
Free wifi will be ubiquitous very soon. Kind of like financial institutions. So why not?
You mean you guys have Wifi at your CU admin offices? We don’t even have that yet!
I’m all for free wifi in the branches, but I wouldn’t advertise because I know some people would bring in their laptops and camp out all day long just to use the internet.
My 17 y.o. daughter knows where all the free wi-fi hotspots are in town. For her, offering free wi-fi = a cool company.
According to the dictionary the main function of “should” in modern American English is to express duty, necessity, etc. I don’t think credit unions have a duty or a necessity to offer free WiFi. It’s a “nice to have” like free coffee, cookies, or cable TV in the lobby.
I’m not against free wifi in branches…think it’s a great idea. I just don’t think it’s a mandatory thing.
For those of you at CUs that do go ahead and offer free wi-fi, please keep a count of how many of the older people that use your branches come in and ask “what’s this whiffy you’re giving away?”
@Matt: Wi-fi moves through the air, like magical waves of wonderful. We breathe air. In the air, among other things, is oxygen. Oxygen is necessary to our survival. Therefore, wi-fi is necessary for our survival.
@Nala I hadn’t thought about that… Good point!
I just don’t see a tight fit. Coffee shops and wi-fi are a perfect combination. Bank lines and wi-fi…not so much. 99% of our members will not need wifi while they are visiting our branches…yet it’s one more thing that our IT department will need to maintain and setup.
